Air traffic woes threaten Gulf aviation boom
The Gulf’s massive aviation growth is under threat from a lack of investment in air traffic control needed to streamline the region’s congested skies, industry experts said. Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways are some of the world’s largest buyers of new aircraft, but their fleet growth may be in doubt if Gulf states don’t funnel more cash into modernising air traffic systems and building airports.

A man who claimed there was a bomb on an Emirates airline plane walked free from court despite admitting to being drunk on an aircraft, it was reported on Monday. Ronald Fowles shouted “you are all going to die” before being hauled off the plane, which was scheduled to fly to Dubai from Heathrow Airport in January.
UAE air traffic movements rise 7.6% in Feb
Air traffic movements in the UAE grew by 7.6 percent in February compared to the same month last year, according to new figures released by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on Tuesday. The GCAA monthly report indicated that air traffic movements totalled 51,431 last month, averaging out at 1,837 per day.

Lufthansa, Germany’s national carrier, is lobbying its government to deny Dubai’s Emirates Airline’s request for landing slots when Berlin’s new airport opens in 2012, a city’s politician has said. The German airline is pushing the federal government to refuse Emirates direct flights to the capital through Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, said Harald Wolf, Berlin’s Mayor and Senator for Economics, Labour and Women’s Issues.
UAE to invest $133bn in aviation infrastructure
“Over the next 10 years the UAE will be investing 500 billion dirhams in its aviation infrastructure improving connectivity and cementing our reputation as a key growth driver in global aviation.” Al Mansoori added that air traffic in the UAE had seen a 11.5 percent growth in the first half of the year.
